Obituary

PLATTSBURGH-Anthony Benware, 63, better known as "Tony" or "Herb", formerly of Lyon Mountain, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the CVPH Medical Center, comforted by his family. Tony is remembered most by his loved ones for his sweet disposition and great sense of humor.
Tony was the fifth of six children, born to Clifton "Buck" and Frances Benware on March 13, 1952.
He graduated from Lyon Mountain High School in 1970 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served our country from 1970 to 1974, also touring in Vietnam. Tony was a Correctional Officer for 26 years, retiring in 2002 from Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility, where he made many life-long friends who he considered family.
Tony's greatest joys in life were his wife and their family. He enjoyed telling stories from the past to his four grandchildren, who were his pride and joy and the light of his life. Tony would do almost anything to make people laugh, from telling a silly joke or singing a song, to performing a jig in the kitchen. He would stop at nothing to bring a smile to a loved-one's face. Much of his life was spent happily in Lyon Mountain, where he grew up, worked, and raised a family of his own. Although he moved to Plattsburgh after retirement, his deep roots in his home town were maintained through his many close friends and family members still there. Tony brought joy to many and his gentle nature made anyone in his presence feel the love he exuded. He adored their dog Buster, loved long walks and camping with his wife, especially at Trout Lake, working in his yard, and taking photographs.
Tony was a dedicated son, husband, father, papa, brother, uncle and friend and is survived by his wife of nearly 41 years, Mary Benware of Plattsburgh; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Bridget Benware, and their son, Emmett, of Plattsburgh; his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and James Ryan, and their children, Olivia, Garrett, and Shaun, of Ellenburg Center; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex and Joanne Benware of Lyon Mountain, and David and Doreen Benware of Lyon Mountain; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nancy and Pete Palmer of Pavillion NY, and Patricia Boland of Plattsburgh; his mother-in-law, Helen Vadnais of Fort Edward, NY, and several beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Tony was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Clifton "McGee" Benware; and his father-in-law, Hebert Vadnais.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m.
