Evelyn Ryan, 89, formerly of Ellenburg, passed away on Thursday, May 28th at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Evelyn was the fourth of six children born to Irving Sr. and Helen (Murphy) Sayah of Altona.

She spent her formative years on the Sayah family farm, as part of the fourth generation to work the farm since 1869. She met her future husband, Ronald Ryan, at one of the weekly dances popular among young people at that time, and they were married in 1959. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before he passed away in early 2022.

Her life was centered on her faith, husband, and family. The arrival of grandchildren and a great grandchild was a source of great joy to her, and she eagerly awaited spending time with them. She provided crucial support to Ronald during the many years they operated his auto repair shop in Ellenburg Depot. After many years of retirement, they moved to Plattsburgh and enjoyed socializing, music, and dancing with all the friends they made at the senior center.

Evelyn displayed a quiet strength and was someone who did not seek to be the center of attention. She enjoyed everything related to the outdoors - especially flowers, gardening, and long walks. She loved crocheting, knitting, and decorating for holidays. She loved cooking for family and their gatherings. Many family members fondly remember her pies, many of which she made with hand-picked raspberries and blueberries.

Evelyn is survived by her children Mark (Mary) Ryan, Daniel Ryan and John Ryan; two grandchildren, Megan (Nathan) Ranck and Maura (Daniel) Reiste; one great grandchild, Benson Ranck; and her brother, Donald Sayah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; her parents; two brothers, Irving Sayah, Jr. and Gerald Sayah; and two sisters, Doris Fagan and Sr. Elizabeth Sayah.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edmund’s Church in Ellenburg on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church.

Interment will follow at Saint Edmund’s Cemetery in Ellenburg.
