James S.
Lapan
May 21, 2024
CHAMPLAIN, NY – James S. Lapan, known to many as Steve or Stevie, passed away at the age of 64 on May 21, 2024, in his home. Steve grew up in Champlain, NY, the son of Joseph Lapan and Marion (Grace) Smith. He was the tenth born among his siblings: Charlie, Francis, Henry, Paul, Pauline, Joseph, Theresa, Walter (Bucky), Suzanne, Joanne, (Steve), Denise, and Jerry.
After high school, Steve enlisted in the military and proudly served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves for many years. He was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, and in the Middle East during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. While in Germany, Steve enjoyed the local culture and the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers. For many years to come, he would tell stories about his experiences and adventures overseas. A decorated and accomplished marksman, Sergeant Lapan received accolades including the National Defense Service Medal among other accomplishments.
In 1988, Steve married and started building a family. His son, Kyle Lapan, was born that same year, followed by his daughter, Katelyn (Wiscovitch), in 1992. One of Steve's most cherished moments was walking Katelyn down the aisle at her wedding this spring.
Steve was an active member of the local community. He kept busy fishing and hunting and was a member of many local sportsman clubs. He was also a member of the Champlain VFW, where he would stop in for a drink and purchase a quick draw ticket, hoping to win big. Additionally, he was a member of the Abenaki Nation, honoring his native heritage and supporting their work in the community.
Many knew Steve as a loyal and faithful friend, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He could often be found visiting a friend's house to catch up over a cup of coffee—blueberry was his favorite. Steve was known for his fiery temperament and deep passion for the things he believed in. He was an avid collector and NASCAR fan, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. being his favorite driver. Steve spent many days outdoors gardening and picking leeks, trapping minnows, and digging for worms.
He was very fortunate to be surrounded by friends and loved ones.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Champlain VFW from noon to 2 pm. All are warmly invited to attend and share a story that captures his one-of-a-kind personality.
