ELLENBURG DEPOT - Jane Evelyn Fritz, age 98, died on February 27, 2019 at the Goodwin House in Alexandria, VA. She was born on March 9, 1920 in Chateaugay, N.Y., the daughter of Jeremiah and Lilyan (Dumont) Mahoney. Jane married William A. Fritz on August 23, 1941.
Jane received her Bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle. She received her Master's degree in Guidance from SUNY Plattsburgh. In 1941, she began her teaching career in Colton, N.Y., and then Norwood, N.Y.
At the beginning of WWII, she lived and worked as a secretary in San Francisco, CA. Jane later came back East and taught adult education in Schuylerville, N.Y., business subjects in Virgil, N.Y., Ellenburg Central, N.Y., Altona Central, N.Y., and finished her career at Northern Adirondack Central School. She retired in 1974 after teaching for 33 years.
Jane was active in Catholic Daughters of America – Court Little Rose. She served a term as an officer. She was active in the Sarah Munsil Library and coauthored the book, " A History of Ellenburg."
Jane enjoyed traveling and cooking for her family and extended family. She was a leader for Webelos/Cub Scouts and Brownie Scouts. Jane was devoted to her family. She enjoyed dancing, shopping and of course, chocolate. Jane enjoyed spending her winters in Little River, S.C.
Jane is pre-deceased by her parents, her sisters Marie Welsh and Helen Schultz, her brothers Dr. John Mahoney, Gerald Mahoney and Larry Mahoney, her husband Willam Fritz and her son William Fritz Jr.
She is survived by her children Michael Fritz (Sue), Mary Coughenour (John), James Fritz (Catherine LeBlanc), Joe Fritz (Glenda), eleven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 3 rd , from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Rabideau Funeral Home in Ellenburg. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg on Monday, March 4 th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick's cemetery in Chateaugay, N.Y. Reception to follow. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Edmund's Church.
