Mary Jane Chilton, 99, passed away, Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Taylor Manor in Versailles, KY. She was born in Utica, NY the daughter of the late Carson and Kathleen (Bloomfield) Lang.
Mary Jane graduated from Utica Free Academy and in 1940, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University with honors in English. She later received her Masters of Library Science from Albany State University.
She was employed at Carthage High School, Fort Monmouth and Fort Edsel in New Jersey and later for Ellenburg Central School, which later changed to Northern Adirondack Central School. Mary Jane retired from NAC after 47 years of service, after inspiring numerous students for over 4 decades. During her tenure, she also served as President of the Northern Adirondack Teachers Association 4 times.
She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators, member and former Chairman of the New York Retired Teachers Association, the Champlain Valley Council of Retired Teachers, past Chairman of Teachers Association of Clinton and Essex Counties, and a Charter member of the Board of the County Resource Center. Mary Jane also served on the New York State Committee for Women for over 50 years, was a founding member and second President of the Clinton County Republican Women, former Secretary of the Ellenburg Republican Committee, Chairman of the Founding Committee of Ellenburg Depot Community Library, and a communicant of St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg since 1941.Mary Jane enjoyed traveling on cruises to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Bermuda, and many other places in the US and world.
She is survived by her son, LTC (R) Robert S. Chilton, Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Versailles, KY and several nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert S. Chilton who passed away in 1979. Mary Jane was part of the greatest generation, and was a passionate supporter of the military and Kentucky National Guard.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with burial at Sheldon Hill Cemetery, Ellenburg Depot, NY.

Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of the Rabideau Funeral Home in Ellenburg.
