ELLENBURG DEPOT---
Robert "Buckey" Smith, 72, of the Plank Road, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at his residence. He was born on February 2, 1944 in Ellenburg Depot, NY, the son of Herbert R. and Hattie (LaFountain) Smith.
Buckey lived his life in Ellenburg, attending Ellenburg Center School. He then served his country from 1963 to 1969 in the United States Army. Following his Honorable Discharge, he married the former Jean M. Barnett in Massachusetts on February 14, 1970.
Buckey worked as a Mason for the Bricklayers Allied Craftworkers Local #2, retiring after over 45 years of service. He was a talented craftsman and took great pride in all of his work.
Buckey was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all. He had a big heart and a good heart and was always the first to be there when anyone needed anything and he never expected anything in return. His loving smile and helping hand will forever be missed.
Buckey was a member of the VFW in Ellenburg, St. Edmund's Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Jean Smith of Ellenburg Depot; three daughters, Bobbie-Jean Smith and her companion Derek Varin of Ellenburg Depot, Nicole Manor and her companion Raymond Stark of Vermontville, NY, and Linda Lou Smith of Austin, TX; one son, Joseph Cayea and his wife Kandy of Morrisonville; one sister, Shirley Miller and her husband Lyman "Gill" Miller; 11 grandchildren, Charlene Manor, Robert Manor, Devin and Kaylon Smith, Drew and Emilee LaBombard, Chelsea and Adam Manor, Amber and Aaron LaTray, Joey Cayea, Ashley Landua, Erin Landua, Alex Grant, and Jake Grant; nine great-grandchildren; six nieces; two nephews; and was also know as "Dad" and "Pepe" to so many throughout the community and he always treated them as his own.
Buckey was predeceased by his parents, and one son, Robert A. Smith.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Rabideau Funeral Home in Ellenburg. Members of the 3
rd
Degree Knights, Council #4441 are asked to meet at the funeral home for 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg.
