ELLENBURG DEPOT, NY---Waneta M. Hawthorne, 98, formerly of Irona Road, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa on June 19, 1917, the daughter of Edward and Alice (Hart) Hyer.
She graduated from Sioux City High School, where she was crowned Mayflower Queen of the graduating class in 1935. She later attended Business College in Iowa.
Waneta married Frank C. Hawthorne on May 20, 1945 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Frank predeceased her on April 6, 1996.
Waneta retired from the Suffolk County Police Department where she worked as a civilian clerk. She was a member of the Women's Group of the Methodist Church in Wilmington, NY and a CSEA Member. She enjoyed spending her time doing arts and crafts, cooking, and most of all she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Mark D. Hawthorne and his wife Patti of Messa, AZ and Amber A. Lashway and her husband Gary of Ellenburg Depot; four grandchildren, Jasmine Peterson, Mark D. Hawthorne, Jr., Matt Hawthorne, and Aimee Bryant; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.
